Olympic gold medal-winning speed skater Apolo Ohno had a choice. Either he could pursue his Olympic dreams or let underage drinking potentially derail his career.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Ohno, an eight-time medalist and the most decorated U.S. winter Olympian, spoke to more than 300 eighth-grade students at Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School in Laurel at a special assembly April 20 about the dangers of underage drinking. He also encouraged them to maintain a healthful lifestyle.
Ohno advocated a strategy of restraint that he said was similar to his racing style.
“In the sport, sometimes I’ll be in the back of the pack, you know, just kind of hangin’ out. But at the end, I swoop around, and I end up winning the race,” he said. “It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.”
Ohno visited Eisenhower at the request of Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.), who represents Laurel and other parts of Prince George’s County. The talk was part of a campaign by the Century Council, a national organization formed in 1991 by alcohol distillers that seeks to prevent underage drinking and drunken driving, according to its Web site…  read more.
